Secure Shell, better known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol that is used to execute commands on a remote machine or to exchange information between a server and a client. Given that the data exchanged by the 2 sides is encoded, a third party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a preferred means of controlling a web hosting account. The commands which can be executed are determined by the type of hosting service. On a shared server, in particular, the options are limited as you shall not have root access to the hosting server, so you could just create/move/delete files, create and unpack archives, import and export databases, etc. These are all actions that are carried out within the shared hosting account and do not need a higher level of access. Using a virtual or a dedicated server, you will have the option to set up server-side software or to restart the machine or only a particular service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted through a command line, but if you don't employ a UNIX-like Operating System, there are a variety of applications for other OSs, you can use to connect to the remote hosting server as well.
SSH Telnet in Website Hosting
SSH access can be allowed with a click through the Hepsia Control Panel if the website hosting
which you have selected offers this function by default. If not, you can include it from the Add Services/Upgrades section of your CP and enable it straightaway. You'll find all the information which you need inside the SSH section of the Control Panel - the host, the port number and the username that you need to use, as well as comprehensive Help articles where we have listed all the commands that you can use within the account and examples of the syntax which you have use. The SSH password can be changed from the same section anytime with a couple of mouse clicks. So long as SSH access is enabled, you will also be able to connect safely via an FTP client as well. With an SFTP connection, all of the files you upload shall go through an encrypted connection.
SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers
SSH access is available by default with some of our semi-dedicated server
plans, while with others you will be able to include it from the hosting Control Panel if necessary - even only for the current month. In any case, you can activate and de-activate the function with one mouse click through the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you can easily type in the password which you want to use, since it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you can also change it as frequently as you need. A complete list of the commands that can be performed inside a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a number of instances. An extra function after SSH access is allowed will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports such connections.
